Step Down

From the album “Warrior Inside”

The Meaning

Step Down is a song that has a dual meaning – the first being a battle with the internal and the second being a battle with the external.

The battle with the flesh is an internal battle where your human nature tries to creep in and pollute your mind. In verse one, the song starts off with having thoughts lurking in while you are trying to hide from them. It is implied that the escape route was not an effective means of handling the evil that has found it’s way into your life. The chorus goes straight into reflection of the damage that has been done by this. You wake up one day and realize that the little bits you have let in over time have corrupted and desensitized your mind. There are many thoughts of denial that you have to fight off when you realize what you have let in (this is where the “And if you think that you’re without, let me remove all forms of doubt” lyric comes in). The only way out is to step back, turn around, and plan’t your feet firmly against the opposition. Verse two is where temptation starts to work itself back in without you knowing it. At first it is unnoticeable, but soon the voice gets louder and louder. You realize that if you are not always on your guard, it will find it’s way back. The bridge is where the realization of this comes and you put every single defense in place possible so that nothing can knock you back down. The final chorus shifts a little bit as it is now a thought used as a constant reminder to always be on your guard. The questions that are echoed are internal questions used to rationalize the reason you can never let your defenses down.

The second meaning is a battle with the external. This is probably how the song comes across to most people. It is meant to be a healthy expression of anger. This came from personal events going on in my life at the time. In the world (and the church specifically in this case) there are so many people who have strong opinions on how they want things done. They get so focused on trying to make things go the way THEY think it should go that they will completely walk over anyone in their path to accomplish this. I think many times it starts off as a good intention to make things the best they can be. However, if they are not extremely careful with motives it can get polluted very quickly. In this version, the laying awake is from unrest and unsettlement with things I was personally experiencing. The chorus is not internal here but directed out as anger to the pollution that the world and church have let crush their sense of unity. In this case I am standing up against the negative and judgmental attitude and waging war against it (not stepping down). Here, the bridge is me actively pursuing the spirit of negativity and fighting against it through all the blows it has sent my way. The more arrows that get thrown my way, the harder I will fight, and the more I will stand and not step down. This lyric, “I will stand and not step down!,” is meant to be the climax of the battle where the adversity has been overcome as a result of the fierce battle. The chorus is now aimed at those who have caused all of this division in hopes to get them to look inwardly and point the finger back at themselves. At the final chorus, the echoes are further pushing this and encouraging the opposers to step into the internal battle and not step down. The two meanings actually loop into themselves this way. The important thing here is that the anger is being directed towards the un-healthy attitudes and evil that is in the world – not the people who let it control them.

Music gets us through the tough times and we hope the struggles we write about can help all of our fans get through some of the same things. When the battle is tough remember to be a LEADER and not Step Down from your convictions. Just make sure they are true convictions and not selfishness that has worked it’s way in. We are a band that talks to our fans and we want to hear from you, so please send us an email or facebook message/post!!

The Lyrics

V1

So many times I lay awake

With sleepless nights and endless days

I try to find a quick escape

Chorus

So look at who you have become

Why have you become so numb?

Can’t you see the things you’ve done?

And if you think that you’re without

Let me remove all forms of doubt

Take one step back then turn around

I’m standing firm I won’t step down

V2

I see the clock upon the wall

And watch the minutes start to fall

While every breath just slips away

I watch the hours fade away

And when the time begins to slow

I look above to give me hope

But soon I hear your voice again

And turn around to see you creeping in

Chorus

So look at who you have become

Why have you become so numb?

Can’t you see the things you’ve done?

And if you think that you’re without

Let me remove all forms of doubt

Take one step back then turn around

I’m standing firm I won’t step down

Bridge

If you try to fight I won’t step down

If you tell me lies I won’t step down

If you take my pride I won’t step down

If you pierce my side I won’t step down

When you try to hide i won’t step down

And if you want my life I won’t step down

When the battle’s tough I won’t step down

I will stand and not step down!

Chorus

So look at who you have become (do you wanna be)

Why have you become so numb? (falling endlessly?)

Can’t you see the things you’ve done?

And if you think that you’re without (do you have have a clue)

Let me remove all forms of doubt (what you wanna do?)

Take one step back then turn around

I’m standing firm I won’t step down
